Pumpkins Anyone?

November 11, 2021 Leave a Comment

Oh what fun to travel in Maine in the fall to see what we could see. And what did we see as we were in Damariscotta and Newcastle Maine? Sure we saw pretty little towns. And some nice fall foliage. These two, next-door neighbors serve as the gateway to Maine’s Boothbay region with its pretty lobstering and fishing-based tourist towns, lobster restaurants, and the lovely Pemaquid Point with its awesome coastline and scenic lighthouse. They are linked by a bridge and are often called “Twin Villages”

But this time we hit Damariscotta during its annual Pumpkinfest.  Dozens of giant (generally 2-3-feet in diameter) squash and pumpkins of 200-1,400 pounds lined Main Street of these two towns.  Just another of the many pleasant travel surprises we often find on trips.

And, by the way, if you happen to be in the area looking for dinner, we previously had a lovely dinner at the Damariscotta River Grill. We began with fried oysters (although Tom substituted tarter sauce for the Cajun sauce) and a generous broiled seafood platter with haddock, salmon, scallops, wild Maine shrimp, and pan-fried lobster cake with sweet corn sauce, rice, and vegetables. The meal was complemented by a lovely bottle of 2012 Domaine Christian Moreau 1st-cru white burgundy from Veillon. We finished the meal with a Maine blueberry cobbler with a ginger crust and vanilla ice cream. Good food and good service. Yummmmmm.
