Sentiero degli Dei, or Path of the Gods

May 15, 2018 Leave a Comment

One of the most famous hikes in the Amalfi area is Path of the Gods. This nine-kilometer hike high above the coastal towns (“halfway between the sea and the sky”) was our primary reason for returning to, and the highlight of our Amalfi coast trip. After a couple days of rain, we were incredibly lucky to find one day in which, not only did it not rain, but that the trail was reasonably dry.

After spending the morning in the city of Amalfi, we took a bus to the mountain town of Bomerano. After a stop at one of the town’s salumaria to pick up a freshly-made sandwich of parma ham, mozzarella, lettuce and tomato, we hiked up to the trailhead for an incredible hike of continual ups and downs, with some of the most stunning views you can imagine.

No matter how high we climbed, cliffs towered above us. Below, was not only the sea, the rugged, cliff-lined coastline and scattered coastal towns, but also acres upon acres of grape vines, scattered farmhouses and, along the trail, a number of abandoned brick houses. Every turn yielded new views and new surprises—a wonderful 2.5-hour hike that ended in the tiny mountain town of Nocelle. From there, it was an 1,800-step stairway down to the main road, plus another 2 km walk along the busy, two-lane (more like 1.5 lane), shoulderless road to our Positano hotel and nice, hot, very well-deserved, pre-dinner showers.

Overall, the trail was all that we had hoped for, and possibly more!

Enough explanation. Hope you enjoy the pictures as much as we did the views.
